Proposal to Install Smart Boards in Lecture Halls

The university plans to install smart boards in all large lecture halls by the end of next semester. According to the administration, these digital boards will replace traditional whiteboards and allow instructors to write, save, and share notes electronically. Additionally, the university argues that smart boards will make lectures more interactive, since professors can display videos, graphs, and live annotations during lessons. Woman: So what do you think about the university adding smart boards to lecture halls?

Man: Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth the money.

Woman: Why not? They sound pretty useful.

Man: Well, for starters, not all professors are comfortable with tech. I’ve had classes where the professor struggled just to load a PowerPoint. Adding smart boards will probably just slow things down.

Woman: That’s true. Some of them aren’t exactly tech-savvy.

Man: Exactly. And also, they say it’ll make learning easier because students can access notes later—but most of my professors already upload lecture slides. So I’m not sure this adds much value.

Woman: Yeah, I guess if we’re already getting the material online, the boards wouldn’t really change that.

Man: Right. It just seems unnecessary when what we have already works fine.

Social Loafing

Social loafing is a psychological concept that refers to the tendency of individuals to put in less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This often happens because people feel less personally responsible for the outcome. In group settings, individuals may assume that others will do the work, so they contribute less themselves. As a result, the group’s overall performance may suffer. Researchers study social loafing to understand how group size, individual accountability, and task structure affect motivation and effort. The concept is especially important in workplace and classroom environments where group projects are common.

To demonstrate social loafing, researchers conducted a simple experiment involving a physical task. They asked participants to pull on a rope as hard as they could. First, each person pulled the rope alone, and their individual effort was measured. Then, they were asked to pull again—but this time as part of a group of six people.

What the researchers found was surprising. Even though the group was pulling together, the total force was less than the combined effort of each individual pulling alone. In fact, the more people there were in the group, the less effort each person gave.

Some participants later said they didn’t feel their individual strength made a difference. Others assumed someone else in the group would pick up the slack. This shows how people often put in less effort when they’re part of a group than when working alone.

Let’s talk about a concept in psychology known as emotional contagion. This is the idea that people can “catch” emotions from others, just like catching a cold. When we see someone express a strong emotion, we may unconsciously begin to feel the same way.

One example occurs in group settings, like a classroom or workplace. If one person comes in feeling cheerful and enthusiastic, that energy can spread to others. People might not even realise it’s happening, but they start to feel more positive too. On the other hand, if someone walks in clearly frustrated or anxious, those emotions can bring down the entire group’s mood.

Another example happens during public events, like concerts or sports games. The excitement of the crowd can make individuals feel more excited themselves, even if they didn’t care much at first. The shared emotion creates a kind of group experience that can be powerful and memorable.
